2016 SMV Conference

May 5-7, 2016 | South Bend, Indiana

The purpose of this second SMV Project event was to enable the ten grant-funded research teams to report on the status of their projects, to provide a context for sharing ideas and fostering collaboration, and to allow the SMV Project Directors to assess the progress of each team.

On May 5-7, 2016, thirty-three researchers converged at The University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, for the 2016 Self, Motivation & Virtue Conference. The event’s purposes were:

  1. To enable the ten SMV-funded research teams to present the preliminary results of their research,
  2. To provide a context for sharing ideas and fostering collaboration, and
  3. To allow the SMV Project Directors to assess the progress of each team.

The event began with a keynote address, co-presented by two distinguished psychologists, Dr. William Fleeson (Wake Forest University) and Dr. Eranda Jayawickreme (Wake Forest University). They presented their recent work on Whole Trait Theory, a new approach to understanding traits that combines the strengths of the two most powerful models of personality.

The keynote address was followed by presentations from the SMV research teams, and questions and discussion from the other researchers. The conference concluded with discussion on “The Pros and Cons of Deep Integration,” moderated by SMV Project directors, Drs. Darcia Narvaez and Nancy Snow, with invited comments by Dr. Candace Vogler (University of Chicago).

Presentation videos are now available on the SMV Project YouTube channel, and conference photos are available here.

This conference was made possible by the generous support of the Spencer Foundation, the Templeton Religion Trust, and The University of Oklahoma. The SMV Project Team is also grateful to Susan Berntson and the Notre Dame Conference Center staff for their efforts in making this event a success.
